Marvel’s Avengers
The main plot of Marvel’s Avengers is shiny and fun, and it stands up to modern Avengers stories. Its heroes have different ways to play, so there are heroes that stand out and ones that you should throw away. So, if Marvel’s Avengers is like an Iron Man suit, then Kamala Khan is its arc reactor. She moves the story forward and gives it the emotional torque it needs. She really is the Avenger in this game, so she should have been featured much more in marketing materials. Her story is as solid as the story of how the Avengers we know and love overcame failure and crippling self-doubt to get back together (and maybe even better than one or two of the Avengers films).
Deadpool
It’s rare for a game to try to be funny and actually make you laugh, which makes High Moon Studios’ Deadpool a real treasure. This third-person hack-and-slash game puts you in the shoes of the Merc with a Mouth and lets you go to town on hordes of disposable, meat-filled enemies. It’s a bloody action adventure that never misses a chance to make a joke.
It’s a good thing, too, because by the end of the movie, the fight scenes start to get boring, but the great script and great comedy more than make up for it. Deadpool’s meta-jokes and breaking of the fourth wall are fun from the beginning to the end. Plus, there’s a scene where you can slap Wolverine for three minutes while he’s out, and who wouldn’t want to do that?

On paper, making an MMO based on the DC universe doesn’t sound like a good idea. What’s so great about everyone if everyone is a superhero? But DC Universe Online is still going strong on PC and next-gen consoles, six years after it came out. In 2013, the game successfully moved from the PS3 and Xbox 360. Players can make their own superhero based on the traits of DC’s many canonical characters, and then they can go out into the open world to fight against the constant threat of doomsday.
Above all, DC Universe Online is a great example of smart post-launch curation because the developers, Daybreak Game Company, have spent the last five years constantly adding new content, updates, fixes, and rewards to the game to make it better and bigger. In 2017, it’s starting to show its age, but DC Universe Online is still a great free-to-play action MMO that shows a deep understanding of and respect for its source material.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
The X-Men Origins: Wolverine game is not only a million times better than the movie it is loosely based on, but it may also be one of the best games based on movies ever. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is the first mature take on the character outside of the comics. It has a R rating and doesn’t shy away from Logan’s ability to brutally beat up his enemies.
The game was more than just blood and guts, though, because the action-heavy combat is fun and simple, and the boss fights were well-designed and never let up. The well-told story also has full voice acting from almost all of the actors in the movie. Hugh Jackman’s gruff tones fit right in with the rest of the story. Unfortunately, the game also has the infamously bad version of Deadpool from the movie, so it’s not all smooth sailing.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2
Activision found a real niche for itself in the 2000s by making dungeon crawlers based on comic book heroes. After games like X-Men: Legends and the first Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, which got better and better, the series reached its peak with Ultimate Alliance 2. It was a team of four games where you had to collect loot.
Even though Ultimate Alliance 2 used a lot of the same ideas as its predecessor, it is the best game in the series because of the small changes that were made. It has a lot of stars from all over the Marvel Universe, the best visuals of the series, and a plot based on the Civil War between heroes and heroes, which is more interesting than you might think. It’s not perfect, but if all you want to do is run down dungeon corridors and punch Magneto in the face, this is the game for you.

Platinum Games is built on the idea of being a hero. Even though Bayonetta and the Transformers Devastation don’t have capes or Kryptonite, they show how good Platinum is at making the kinds of big explosions, eye-catching graphics, and happy hearts that make superheroes so popular. So it’s not surprising that when Platinum made The Wonderful 101, a superhero game, it hit the nail on the head with a hammer the size of a building.
In Wonderful 101, you lead a team of 100 superheroes as they fight an alien force that wants to take over the world. In Platinum form, you fight battles that look and feel bigger than life, but there’s a twist: the mass of superheroes you control combine to make huge weapons that you use in battle, making you feel just as big and powerful as the things you’re fighting. Even though the game isn’t perfect (the Wii U GamePad is sometimes painfully forced in), it’s hard not to love it because of how silly it is and how much it loves superheroes.
LEGO Marvel Super Heroes (2013) – 83
LEGO has made great video games based on a lot of franchises, and Marvel is no different. Since most gamers thought LEGO Marvel Super Heroes was better than LEGO, Marvel’s Avengers shows how good the LEGO game is, and it was also a good game in its own right.
In LEGO Marvel, you can play as Iron Man, the Hulk, and Captain America, just like in Lego Marvel’s Avengers. But that’s not all. What really sets Marvel Superheroes apart is that it has Spider-Man, Wolverine, and a whole bunch of other fan-favorite Marvel characters. With a bit of the classic LEGO game humour thrown in, it makes for a funny but sweet game.
X-Men Legends II: Rise Of Apocalypse (2005) – 84
Even though the movie might have been a letdown for some fans, X-Men: Apocalypse might have done better if it had taken some ideas from the best X-Men game, X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse.
Not only does the story revolve around one of the most dangerous mutant bad guys, but the gameplay is also very good. Legends II is a turn-based role-playing game where you can play as Wolverine or any of the other characters from the series.
