The Last of Us Part II
Naughty Dog returns to its harrowing vision of a post-pandemic world, and picks up the story of Joel and Ellie. This time players will mostly be in Ellie’s shoes, as she treads a path that few would be able to stomach, in search of justice. It’s a journey that will break your heart and could be a new high point for games with cinematic storylines. A must-play for anyone who owns a PlayStation.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher 3 is not just one of the best games for the PlayStation 4, but also one of the best games of all time. It is an amazing feat of game design that every action in the huge third-person RPG seems to have an effect on the game world. If you save a merchant from some bandits in a random encounter, for example, you might run into him again many hours later in a city, where he gives you a huge discount on items he has for sale. The world itself looks like it’s full of life and colour, and the game can test your skills so you can’t just speed through it. Superb.
God of War
God of War is, in a word, beautiful. Its third-person, over-the-shoulder view works well for both emotional storytelling and an easy-to-understand combat system. We like the way you can throw an axe and, in particular, how heavy it feels when it comes back to your hand like Thor’s hammer. This is the best God of War game and one of the best PlayStation games ever, so no PS4 should be without it.
For the first time, FromSoftware’s amazing game design comes to a truly open world. You can roam around at your own pace, finding new areas and enemies and getting stronger as you go through the tough but highly rewarding combat. This is a new work of art in the same style.
Red Dead Redemption 2
A truly beautiful game that will keep you busy and happy for weeks. It starts off slowly, but the amount of depth and variety in the types of missions will soon have you hooked. Rockstar doesn’t make games as often as some other companies, but it is one of the best. There aren’t many open-world games that get as much thought and care as this one.
It’s hard to explain how much fun it is to swing around the streets in Spider-Man. You’ll find yourself doing it for hours even when you don’t have a mission to complete. But luckily, the open world superhero game also has a great story and game. Fans of comic books will also love the fact that there are so many collectibles and costumes to unlock. And some great characters make appearances along the way.
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
Uncharted 4 isn’t just the result of what Naughty Dog learned from the first three games; it also has a lot to do with what the company learned from making The Last of Us. Even though the tone is very different, A Thief’s End takes some ideas from its long-running horror-themed stablemate. This makes it the most well-rounded and balanced game the studio has made so far.
Final Fantasy VII Remake
Final Fantasy VII Remake may be a newer addition to the list, but it would easily fit into any list of the best PS4 games, even if it was just the top five. The exclusive PS4 game is more than just a remaster of the classic PSOne JRPG. It’s almost a new game because it’s been rebuilt from the ground up, with amazing new graphics and a combat system that are on par with most other games released this generation.
Bloodborne is only on PS4, but it comes from the same studio as Dark Souls, which you can tell almost right away. It matches its stablemate series graphically, albeit with current generation flair, but the main similarity is that both action-adventure/RPGs are as difficult as each other. Get ready to throw around your DualShock 4. Often.
Control is a paranormal adventure/shooter from the same team that made Alan Wake, which has also become a cult classic. It is one of the best and most unexpected hits of 2019. Its art style, which is made up of pastel colours and a purposely grainy top layer, goes well with the theme and gives off a dream-like vibe. And the game mechanics that give you new weapons and powers as you progress are so well made that you never feel overwhelmed by the increasing difficulty. Superb.
Cursed Castilla (2019)
Cursed Castilla (Maldita Castilla EX) is an arcade action platformer full of monsters from chivalric romances and mediaeval myths from Spain and the rest of Europe. This game is a longer version of the famous classic arcade game Maldita Castilla, which was made by the independent studio Locomalito.
Onrush is an upcoming racing video game for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It was made by Codemasters and will be sold by Deep Silver. Onrush is a racing game in the arcade style where players drive cars, motorcycles, and off-road vehicles over large levels with hills. There will be a boost system in the game that players can use to speed up their vehicles. Players can get a boost by doing tricks and crashing into other racers to knock them out.
