This isn’t easy, because there are so many games from so many different genres that could be on the list. In late 2021, Sony’s PlayStation 2 is still the best-selling console ever made, which shows how good the era and the games were. With games like Grand Theft Auto 3, Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill 2, and FF10, the PlayStation 2 had it all.

It’s not easy to find the best PS2 games. It’s even more difficult to cut that list down to just one thing. But we’ve tried it out.
SOCOM 2: US Navy Seals
With the original SOCOM: US Navy Seals, Zipper Interactive did a good job of bringing third-person tactical shooting to the PS2. This sequel, on the other hand, did even better in almost every way. The single-player experience had better AI, more different goals, and more weapons over the course of its 12 missions. However, those who played it back then know that the real fun was having fun with other people online, because it was one of the best-networked games on Sony’s console. The servers are down now, but there is a LAN option for those who really want to play.
OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast
In Sega AM2’s driving game, you just need to drive beautiful Ferrari cars through beautiful scenery while using one of the best drift mechanics in the game as you go. This is a simple game. During the arcade version, that was all there was to it. In the version by Sumo Digital, there are so many more things to do through the Coast 2 Coast mode, which has a lot of different driving challenges. If you like arcade racing games, you won’t find many that are as fun as this one, and it’s worth getting for the PS2 because later digital releases were taken off the store because of licencing issues.
Is the PS2 retro yet? This game might change your mind. Imagine what it would take for Konami to put out a boxed, retail shoot-’em-up made by Treasure in today’s market. Great graphics and new ways to use the Option drones, which have always been an important part of the game series, make this a great continuation of the series. It’s a very old-school experience, and it’s a must-have for any fan of the genre.
Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution
After the first Virtua Fighter 4 game was well-received, Sega added a few more fighters, smoothed out the graphics, and added a lot of single-player content to the game. In the end, it was a top-notch game, no matter if you were beating your friends or taking on enemies in the virtual arcades of Quest mode, which were based on real-life pro gamers. A lot of people think that this series is too hard to get into, but that’s not true at all. It’s very easy to learn, with just three main buttons and one of the best tutorial modes of its time.
Dragon Quest 8: Journey Of The Cursed King
A lot of people like the PS2’s only major Dragon Quest game. Exactly as you’d expect from a game from one of the best Japanese RPG series, this game still reflects the core of the genre. It was a great way for European players who got this as their first official game in the series to start. As a game, it’s very simple, and even for a game in the series, it has a simple plot. But there’s a lot of value in being great at the basics, and this game does that in every way, from Akira Toriyama’s beautiful cel-shaded characters to the top-notch localization.
Gran Turismo 4
This game was a lot more realistic than other racing games at the time. Gran Turismo 4 was a long way ahead of the other console games at that time. Polyphony Digital didn’t try to do anything new or clever with the game. Instead, they tried to improve the things that made the series so popular in the first place. Gran Turismo 4 is a huge game with more than 700 cars and more than 50 tracks to race on. It also looked great. As well as having fun on the track, the new B-Spec racing management mode was a great addition.
Tony Hawk’s Underground
Take a look at Neversoft. It would have been easy to make another skateboarding game that was the same as the first one. Instead, the team took a risk and pushed the series in a new direction, adding a more free-roaming style of play and a lot of story that hadn’t been in previous games. You could walk around and pick up new challenges as you went. This made a series that was at risk of becoming a little stale interesting again.
