The design of games has gotten better and better over time, so a new type of game has come out that gives players a lot of freedom in how they move and fight. There are a lot of character action games, and there’s nothing like the thrill of taking on hordes of enemies as a warrior who can do amazing things. They’re flashy, stylish, and a lot of fun, but which are the best character action games?

Many people think character action games are like hack ’em up or beat ’em up games. They are usually in 3D and have complex systems, complete and unique freedom for movement, and support for huge combos. They’re all about kicking ass and looking good while you do it.
If you like action games with characters, this is a list of some of the best ones. We ranked them because we wanted to be a little more spicy. We’ve also kept to the rule of only one game per franchise, because not doing so would have led to four different Devil May Cry games. If you want to play a game with a lot of different characters, look at these.
Ninja Gaiden Black
Developer: Time Ninja
Publisher: Koei Tecmo
Truth be told, this is the “Ninja Gaiden of your choice” pick that you made. The three modern Ninja Gaiden games (Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z doesn’t count), as well as all the different versions of them, are some of the best character action games on the market. But which one is the best?
We’ve chosen Ninja Gaiden Black, which is a remake of the original Xbox game with new enemies and moves. If you want to add the most recent game, Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection, which includes three games for a low price, that’s fine.
Regardless of which Ninja Gaiden game you like, there are a lot of things that connect each one in the series. As Ryu Hayabusa, he fights demonic threats all over the world. Every game in the series is about as hard as it gets, but it’s still a lot of fun to play them. They’re hard, but if you keep going, you’ll get a very rewarding character action game.
God Of War 3 Remastered
Developer: Santa Monica Studio
Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
It was the West’s best shot at taking on the character action genre with the God of War series before it became all about the boy. Kratos’ huge weapons and huge combos would be compared to the likes of Dante and others. The reboot of God of War has made the game less about characters and more about the world around them. It’s hard to forget the sheer bombast of God Of War 3, which was one of the best character action games ever made, but it’s not easy to forget.
This is the end of Kratos’ Greek killing spree. In God of War 3, Kratos tries to kill Zeus and the rest of the Greek pantheon for good. There were a lot of big Titans in God of War 3. The PS4 version of the game has been remastered, and it makes the Titans look and feel even more impressive than they were before. Game: There are many games where you have to kill gods, but not many do it with as much style and bloodshed as God of War 3 Remastered.
No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle
Developer: Grasshopper Manufacture
Publisher: Ubisoft, Rising Star Games, Marvelous
Platform(s): PC, Wii, Switch
Ninja Gaiden fans have a wide range of opinions about which game in the No More Heroes series is best. The only thing that everyone agrees on is that Travis Strikes Back isn’t it. No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle is our favourite game in this series. Some people prefer the original because it’s the first game and has a lot of new and interesting ideas. Other people love how ridiculous it is in the third game.
A game called No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle follows Travis Touchdown as he makes his way through a group of top assassins. This time, he’s taking on 51 capable killers instead of just 11.
In No More Heroes 2, the gameplay has gotten better and the open world has been removed. This makes the game even better on the Switch.
Platform(s): PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One
People with swords aren’t the only characters in action games that are fun to play. One of the best examples of the genre is a third-person shooter. This is a third-person shooter made by PlatinumGames, which makes sense since it’s made by PlatinumGames. Vanquish is undoubtedly one of the most stylish and satisfying third-person shooters out there, and it’s also one of the best.
Suit up in an Augmented Reaction Suit as a government agent named Sam Gideon and help stop an evil space station from being taken over by a lot of people. Because you have an advanced suit, though, you can do things that no one else can do, like slide-boost across the floor at 100 mph, or shoot people so quickly that it feels like time is slowing down.
Vanquish is a game that asks a lot of the player, but gives so much back. This makes it a classic character action game, and it’s one of the best.
PlatinumGames has almost made a name for itself because of its character action games, but none of them are as unique as Astral Chain.
Astral Chain isn’t like most character action games, where the player character is the badass. It’s more like the world’s most hyped puppeteer. It might not be the best way to describe it, but Astral Chain is still one of the best character action games you can buy.
There are extra-dimensional baddies known as Chimeras who are putting humanity on the brink of extinction in the future, and they’re making things even worse. In Neuron, when you join the group for the first time, you get Legion, which is a captured Chimera that can do your work. To solve puzzles, do research, and most important of all, smack some demons around the place, you’ll need to use this tool! Acting like you don’t have to do everything yourself is a new thing that takes some getting used to, but the results are worth it!
Developer: Clover Studio
Platform(s): PS2, PS3
A lot of the people who worked on PlatinumGames before they became a company were part of Capcom’s Clover Studio, which made some of the most outlandish and memorable PS2 games. Okami seems to be the game from Clover that everyone likes to remember, while Viewtiful Joe is the one that people want to see come back. Their third game, God Hand, is a character action game classic.
Take control of Gene, who is in charge of the God Hand, which gives him the power to whack demons all day long. When all the demons are out to get him, it’s a good thing that he’s still alive.
God Hand allowed players to build their own movesets from over 100 different attacks, as well as use the right stick to dodge in a variety of ways. This was important because God Hand is a notoriously hard nut to crack. God Hand is a hard game to find these days, and it can cost a lot of money, but it’s worth going out of your way to play for yourself.
Ninja Gaiden 2
As far back as 2008, it was hard to think of an action game that could be faster and more frenetic than the original rebooted Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox. Then, in came Ninja Gaiden 2. Even though Ninja Gaiden 2 kept the same basic combat system as its predecessor, it had a very different feel to it. Light and heavy attacks and fighting game-style combo inputs were still used. It was much more linear, the action was almost non-stop, and a new health system would restore your health at the end of every combat encounter up to a certain point, leading to these intense struggles where the end of every battle was an absolute relief. In Ninja Gaiden 2, the level design isn’t as good as in the first game, but it still makes the cut because of its slick animations, smooth action, and rewarding fights.
Bayonetta 1 and Bayonetta 2
Both Bayonettas are so similar that it’s hard to pick one over the other, so both of them get the 7 and 6 spots at the same time. This game is very good at being an action game. It’s hard, it’s fun, and it’s stylish as hell, but most importantly, it rewards a good mix of offence and defence. People who play a lot of action games don’t usually get a reward for having good defence. Instead, they don’t get hurt and may get a chance to fight back, too. But in Bayonetta, every time you make a perfect dodge, you start Witch Time, which lets you do a lot more damage because the action is slowed down. There is a lot of action, but it also has a lot of that cool feeling you get when you get away from a big attack.
