When it comes to video games, the open-world genre is one of the most common. Improvements in console hardware and game engines have made it possible for game developers to make huge maps filled with loot, side quests, and NPCs. The success and acclaim of open-world games has led to a lot of companies trying to fit them into their games, but often with poor results. In the last few years, there have been a lot of great open-world games, and many of them will be fun for people who like third-person shooters.
So that it doesn’t turn into a list of all of Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption games, I want to say that this article will only have one game from each franchise.
Ghost Recon Wildlands
- Initial Release Date: March 7, 2017
- Available Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Google Stadia
A game called Ghost Recon Wildlands by Tom Clancy made two very interesting and very controversial changes to the Ghost Recon game. For one thing, it was the first game in the series to have an open-world. Second, it goes back to a modern setting, not a futuristic one like the one that Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter had.
The two changes have divided fans. One thing that can’t be denied is how beautiful the open world is, with stunning graphics that make the game a pleasure to look at and play.
Mass Effect: Andromeda
- Initial Release Date: March 21, 2017
- Available Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
It would be fair to say that the launch of Mass Effect: Andromeda was terrible. The game had a lot of bugs and glitches when it came out, which hurt a lot of people who were really into the series. The game’s story also came under fire because many players said they didn’t connect with any of the characters.
It’s fair to say that a lot of the game was unfairly criticised because it didn’t live up to the unrealistic expectations that were set for it. For the first time in the Mass Effect series, Mass Effect: Andromeda has the best combat in the series, as well as a world that’s open to the public for the first time in the series.
Mercenaries 2: World in Flames
- Initial Release Date: August 31, 2008
- Available Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
Mercenaries 2: World in Flames was made by Pandemic Studios. It’s an action game that’s fun to play and has a lot of weapons and vehicles to use, much like the Just Cause games.
In 2008, the action game was a surprise source of political problems because of its story. A war-torn state called Venezuela is the setting for the game, which asks players to kill its president. As you might expect, this didn’t go over well in the country. People said that the game was being used for political purposes.
- Initial Release Date: November 19, 2009
- Available Platforms: BlackBerry, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, iOS
2009’s The Saboteur was made by Pandemic Studios and released by Electronic Arts, just like The Mercenaries 2 in 2008. It doesn’t take place in Venezuela, but it does happen in Nazi-occupied Paris in World War II.
The game has an interesting art design that ties in with the gameplay. Areas that are mostly controlled by Nazi forces are shown in black and white, with only a few things in colour, like symbols and blood.
The Division 2
- Initial Release Date: February 7, 2019
- Available Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, Microsoft Windows
It’s a game set in Washington, D.C., called Tom Clancy’s The Division 2. Players can work together in teams of up to four people to fight against each other. Shortly after the game came out, Ubisoft said that the game didn’t sell as well as they had hoped. That’s not the only reason The Division 2 has sold more than 10 million copies. People have talked about it and given it high marks because of that.
The Division 2 did well with critics, too, with a score of 84 on Metacritic and a nomination for Best Action/Adventure at the 2018 Game Awards.
‘Red Faction: Guerrilla
- Initial Release Date: June 2, 2009
- Available Platforms: (Original) PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows (Remaster) Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
People can go to Mars in Red Faction: Guerrilla, a sci-fi game in which they have to fight for their lives. In 2009, the game was a big hit because of its destructible environments, which may not seem like much now but were a big deal at the time. Many people liked firing at buildings and watching them fall down.
Red Faction: Guerrilla recently got a new version that was renamed Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered. The game came out in June of this year. It’s a great reason to play it again.
Watch Dogs 2
- Initial Release Date: November 15, 2016
- Available Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, Stadia
It’s easy to forget now how much people were excited about the original Watch Dogs when it came out in 2014. The game, like Mass Effect: Andromeda, was widely panned when it came out because it didn’t live up to expectations. Players are now starting to appreciate the game for what it was.
Over two years after its predecessor, Watch Dogs 2 came out. It tried to fix some of its flaws, like the dull open world. A good open-world game can still be found in Watch Dogs 2. Ubisoft’s second game in the series, like the other two in the series, feels like it could have been better.
- Initial Release Date: September 1, 2015
- Available Platforms: Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Linux, macOS
There was once a time when games based on movies were all over the gaming market. When a popular movie like Harry Potter came out, game publishers would often try to cash in on that success by making a game that lasted 6-8 hours. This was true for almost every movie for kids. It has been a long time since these games were popular, though. Because game developers had to meet very short deadlines with tie-in games, they often came up with low quality products.
Some movies and properties are just begging to be turned into video games, like the Mad Max series. Despite the scepticism that players now have about movie tie-in games, there are some that are just begging to be turned into games. Mad Max came out a few months after Mad Max: Fury Road. The game isn’t a direct connection to the movie, but it’s still fun to play. There were no limits on how long the game had to be, like there are with most tie-in games. This is likely why Mad Max was a hit.
Killzone: Shadow Fall
When the PlayStation 4 came out, Killzone: Shadow Fall was one of the first games that people could play. It had to convince people that it was worth getting a new console. It was able to do its job and more, with a campaign that was full of beautiful, colourful environments and quick shooting that took full advantage of the new Ps4 controllers. As a competitive multiplayer game, Shadow: Fall did even better than some of its competitors. This was because it focused more on coordination and team play than some of its rivals.
Blizzard’s Overwatch is one of the most important games of the last decade. It didn’t come up with the “hero shooter,” but it took the idea and made it look great. You can get a lot of variety in a standard multiplayer game because there are so many unique heroes who all play differently. Seasonal events like “Lucioball” add fun twists to the game’s rules. When we saw how Overwatch’s classes all work together to make a good team game, we were amazed. We also have a lot more Overwatch to look forward to, as the game’s sequel is coming out some time soon.
