It would appear that twenty-one days is not enough time to watch all of the classic Bollywood films that can be found in the OTT libraries. Here’s a list of 19 classic films to watch to unwind and forget about lockdown anxiety. Of course, this isn’t a complete list.
1. Mughal-e-Azam (1960) on Amazon Prime Video
Epic historical drama film K. Asif directed portrays the love story between Mughal Prince Salim and Anarkali, a courtesan of the Mughal empire. Emperor Akbar, Salim’s father, disapproves of their relationship, igniting a family feud. Prithviraj Kapoor, Madhubala, and Dilip Kumar star in this timeless classic. 2. Watch Bobby (1973) on Netflix
Dimple Kapadia’s role in the film, which also features Rishi Kapoor, Pran, and Prem Nath, is regarded as a masterpiece in Indian cinema. A prosperous Hindu businessman’s 18-year-old son, Raja, falls in love with a 16-year-old Catholic, Bobby, from a totally different background. Netflix has a copy of the film.
3. Watch Chupke Chupke (1975) on Netflix
Comedy directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee about a man trying to prove his wife’s brother-in-law isn’t as brilliant as he claims by posing as a driver and misleading him. Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan both star in the film. Netflix has a copy of the film.
4. Watch Sholay (1975) on Amazon Prime Video
Gabbar Singh, a known dacoit, is captured by a pair of small-time robbers who are summoned by a retired policeman (Thakur). Featuring Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Hema Malini, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya, and the late Amjad Khan, Ramesh Sippy directed the revenge-thriller. Amazon Prime Video has it available for you to watch.
5. Watch Amar Akbar Anthony (1977) on Netflix
Many consider the Manmohan Desai star-studded Bollywood masala film to be the best ever made. A first for Amitabh Bachchan, the film was an attempt to appeal to a broad audience. Big B’s portrayal of Anthony Gonsalves amused the crowd. Laxmikant-distinctive Pyarelal’s score, the dramatic one-liners, the colorful cast, and the odd blend of humor and melodrama left a lasting impression on pop culture. Netflix has a copy of the film.
6. Watch Gol Maal (1979) on Netflix
In terms of popular comedies, the Hrishikesh Mukherji treasure is up there with the best of them. Amol Palekar and Bindiya Goswami star in the film, which features Utpal Dutt in one of his most memorable roles as a comedy actor. The film is about a man who is forced to pretend that he has an errant twin brother. The movie may be seen for free on Netflix. Rohit Shetty’s 2012 successful film ‘Bol Bachchan’ was inspired by this concept.
7. Watch Silsila (1981) on Amazon Prime Video
Adultery is the recurrence of a love tale that was thwarted by social expectations. Rekha, Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, and Shashi Kapoor star in the film, which was released in 2010. Amazon Prime Video has the love drama directed by the late Yash Chopra.
8. Watch Angoor (1982) on Hotstar
Two sets of identical twins are separated at birth and later reunite in this classic comedy. What follows is a whirlwind of bewilderment, confusion, and even more uncertainty. 10. Watch Maine Pyaar Kiya (1989) on Amazon Prime Video
As a child of the 1990s, many people have fond memories of the musical directed by Sooraj Barjatya. In Bollywood, it redefined friendship and romance. Prem (Salman Khan) and Suman (Bhagyashreelove )’s story is hampered by family issues and financial inequalities in this Sooraj Barjatya-directed film. 11. Watch Lamhe (1991) Amazon Prime Video
Viren (Anil Kapoor) is a young man who falls in love with an older woman, Pallavi (late Sridevi), and the two eventually marry. Pallavi and her husband are tragically killed in an accident, leaving their infant daughter Pooja orphaned. As a child, Pooja looks like her mother. It tells the story of her blossoming romance with an increasingly mature Viren. The Yash Chopra-directed film is now streaming via Amazon Prime.
12. Watch Andaz Apna Apna (1994) on Netflix
The film tells the story of two young men who find out that a beautiful heiress resides in their neighborhood and try to woo her into a relationship. Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor are also in the cast. Shakti Kapoor is also in the cast. Amazon Prime Video and Netflix carry it.
13. Watch Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1994) on Netflix
The film stars Shah Rukh Khan, Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, and Deepak Tijori and tells the story of a boy who falls in love with a girl who is already in love with someone else and tries to cause a wedge between them. Netflix has a copy of the film.
14. Watch Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) on Amazon Prime Video
Watch Raj and Simran’s story come to life for the first time in decades.
