10 Best Fantasy Video Games That You Should Know Update 03/2024

If you are a gamer, sometimes you want to take a swan dive into a world of enchantment so you can get some magic into your life. Sure, they can play a lot of FPS games, or they can just play some arcade games and not think about anything else. But what about the titles that make the outside world fade away, don’t you think?

A lot of people have used fantasy as a source of inspiration for games since the beginning. But there are so many titles to choose from, how do you know which one is the real king? Metacritic is a good place to start if you want to know what other people think.

1. Kingdom Hearts (Metacritic Score: 85)

Kingdom Hearts

It’s probably the most lore-heavy game on the list, but it’s also one of the best RPGs ever made. If you put together the beautiful, big-scale world of Final Fantasy with Disney’s charming characters and unique magic, it was a huge hit. Take up the Keyblade as Sora and go on a journey with Donald and Goofy through different Disney worlds in this ultimate crossover experience. For anyone who likes games or Disney, this is a must-have. But be warned: It’s a lot of money.

2. Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition (Metacritic Score: 90)

As a dungeon crawler game, Diablo has always been one of the best-known kings. But its third game is the one that everyone and their mother loved. Even though the game made some bad choices about how it looked, the world of Sanctuary was bigger than ever, and there was a lot of loot and demons to kill.

Seven classes and a lot of options make it impossible for anything bad or good to stand in the way of the Nephalem.

3. Dragon Age: Origins (Metacritic Score: 91)

Dragon Age Origins

For games that have a lot of story, players can’t go wrong with Dragon Age. It doesn’t matter how big or open Inquisition is compared to Origins; it’s still the best game in the series because it has that sense of epic fantasy.

People play as Grey Wardens who must fight off the Darkspawn before they take over the world with their evil powers. This game is set in a world that would make JRR Tolkien very happy. A typical good-vs.-evil story, but one with a lot of choices about how the story goes.

4. Final Fantasy VII (Metacritic Score: 92)

As one of the best RPGs ever made, Final Fantasy VII truly showed off what the well-known JRPG series had to say about itself.

Cloud Strife and the rest of his party fight against the forces of the Shinra Corporation in one of the best games ever made. Swords and sorcery aren’t as common as they used to be, but this game is in a league of its own.

5. Bloodborne (Metacritic Score: 92)

Bloodborne

Even though FromSoftware’s Dark Souls series might have changed the way people play games by making them dark and scary, Bloodborne’s Lovecraftian style is what makes it on this list. In Yharnam, the world of Gothic horror is a dream come true for anyone who likes the genre. This movie has a lot of ways to sharpen your blade or become a pile of gore. There are werewolves, zombies, and other ancient things in this movie.

6. The Witcher III: Wild Hunt (Metacritic Score: 92)

Witcher 3 is the best game for players who want to get lost in a world full of monsters and magic. There’s too much fantasy lore and depth even if they haven’t played the original games. Even if they haven’t.

Hardcore gamers will love all the side quests and crafting, and others will enjoy the wonderful world that was inspired by the fantastic book series.

7. Elden Ring

Elden Ring

FromSoftware’s latest game in the “soulslike” genre, this new fantasy game has been well-received by both players and critics. To see why this is a great fantasy item, read our review of the Elden Ring.

As a video game, Elden Ring proves that you don’t need to be very money-hungry, or have a lot of “collectables” systems in order to make a good game. 8. Genshin Impact

When Genshin Impact came out, many people didn’t know much about the world of gacha games at all. Most of the best free PC games don’t come close to having as many fun missions, good characters, and beautiful graphics for free. It’s a great place to start!

This is a game that can be a little hit or miss when it comes to the writing. Even if Paimon gets on your nerves, there’s always something to keep you going, whether it’s the promise of cool loot and characters you don’t know, or the promise of a beautiful new area.

9. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt

It’s clear now that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is one of the best PC games of all time. It’s a fantasy world that’s filled with real-life interactions and stories of sorrow, joy, and everything in between. In the end, it’s the fact that it’s so focused on telling stories, both big and small, that makes it so appealing.

This game is said to be at its best as a fantasy game when you play the Hearts of Stone DLC quest lines. A lot of creative twists on old fantasy stories can be found here. The latter even has a fully-explored “Land of a Thousand Fables.”

After Geralt’s journey is over and you’ve spent a lot of time with good people, you’ll likely leave The Witcher 3 with a lump in your throat and a lot of stories to tell.

10. Divinity: Original Sin 2

This is the best time to play the last game made by the company that made Baldur’s Gate 3. This is an RPG that “gently encourages actual roleplaying, and is backed by a strong relationship between quests and simulation.” Divinity: Original Sin 2 is an epic RPG.

Divinity: Original Sin 2’s turn-based combat is where it shines the most, with spells that can change the battlefield in a variety of ways. It makes you think about how to use your spells and abilities so that your party members don’t get into trouble. In Divinity: Original Sin 2, there are more than 30 hours worth of RPG fun to be had, and that’s just the first playthrough.
