So grab a cup of your favorite beverage and a warm blanket and settle in for a good night’s sleep. Here are five of the best Japanese romantic anime films ever made!
1. Doukyuusei (Classmates)
This popular anime romance follows the story of two high school boys who meet and fall in love.
It’s a typical yaoi anime romance narrative, with a lot of the typical angst and heartbreak that you’d expect from a high school relationship.
This film has a distinct visual style that sets it different from the rest. Even though it’s distinctive for the genre, its simplicity appeals to a wide range of listeners.
2. Kimi no Na wa (Your Name)
In anime and manga, body-swapping is a common comic device. On the other hand, Kimi no Na wa makes romantic use of it.
When it comes to Tokyo, a country girl wants to live like a male, while a city-dwelling young man is fed up with his frantic lifestyle.
They wake up in each other’s bodies and lifestyles one morning. They set out to find each other after being perplexed and captivated by the mystery.
This film won the LAFCA Animation Award in 2016 and the Mainichi Film Awards for Best Animated Film in 2017.
The plot twists and turns in a way that is both lovely and heartbreaking. A must-see for lovers of the genre.
This isn’t Amazon Prime’s best movie, but you can watch it and learn why it’s considered one of the best Japanese romance animation films.
3. Tamako Love Story
A romantic comedy is what you’re looking for. Tamako Love Story tells the story of two high school students who are finally able to express their affections for each other.
Whenever Mochizo Oji decides to leave for college, he also resolves to tell Tamako about his feelings.
An awkward and heartfelt love story is born out of local rivalries and a lot of heart in this small-town tale.
As you follow the escapades of two young people in love, your heart will be warmed and your laughter will be contagious.
4. Mimi wo Sumaseba (Whisper of the Heart)
Whisper of the Heart is a Studio Ghibli production. The animation, as in all of the studio’s works, is stunning.
They keep bumping into each other, and the lad seems to be trying to get on the nerves of the young songwriter girl. The two begin to get to know each other’s hopes and dreams over time.
This isn’t as mythological as some of Studio Ghibli’s other works, but it’s still a wonderful piece of work.
Many of us can identify with this narrative, which is not only about love, but also about pursuing one’s aspirations and deciding what truly counts in life. It’s a must-do.
5. Hotarubi no Mori e (Into the Forest of Fireflies’ Light)
In the Forest of Fireflies’ Light, a Japanese folk tale, tells the narrative of a young couple’s love and tragedy.
As a child, Hotaru is wandering in the woods and meets a forest ghost, Gin. When he touches a human, Gin vanishes.
Eventually, as Hotaru matures into a young woman, the two develop feelings for one another. However, there is sweetness in the bitterness of this story’s end.
The stunning animation enhances the story’s impact.
6. KazeTachinu (The Wind Rises)
Jiro Horikoshi, the creator of the Zero fighter plane, is the subject of a new Studio Ghibli film.
At first, Jiro was told that he couldn’t fly an airplane because he couldn’t see well enough. He soon discovered that his work as an airplane engineer had many obstacles of its own.
In the meantime, he falls in love with a young woman he’s met numerous times in passing, a woman whose own tragedy is looming large over her life. Despite its sweetness, viewers will be challenged by this story.
7. Kotonoha no Niwa (The Garden of Words)
A young shoemaker and a mysterious woman meet and fall in love in this passionate love story.
There is no way of knowing who the other person is when they first meet in the park.
It takes a turn for the terrible as the names of the characters are disclosed and further details emerge.
Dramatically, it is a peaceful and beautiful piece of work, with numerous cultural oddities.
Incredible, almost photorealistic, hand-drawn depiction of the park where the two spend much of their time. It’s a romantic picture that’s full with heart and sentimentality.
8. Howl no Ugoku Shiro (Howl’s Moving Castle)
Adapted from a Dianna Wynne Jones western novel, this Studio Ghibli film is one of the best-known and most popular.
As luck would have it, Sophie is saved by the famed and enigmatic wizard Howl, who regrettably attracts the wrath of a jealous Witch of the Waste. Her quest for a cure from Howl leads to a series of disasters.
You won’t be disappointed by this action-packed and attractive film. Watch Howl’s Moving Castle for an hour and a half of fantastical adventure!
9. Zutto Mae kara Suki Deshita: Kokuhaku Jikkou Iinkai (I’ve Always Liked You)
A group of high school students who are unable to express their crushes about their thoughts are the focus of this Tetsuya Yanagisawa-directed romantic comedy. On April 23, 2016, the film was released.
This is a standard rom-com, with a lot of teenage awkwardness and envy thrown in for good measure. It’s a great movie to watch in your pyjamas, and the art is fantastic.
Those looking for sad romance anime movies to watch should give this one a try, as the story is quite original. You’ll also want to check out the fantastic soundtracks.
10. Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time)
When Makoto discovers that she has the ability to travel back in time, she uses her powers to remedy her own problems, such as frequent tardiness and poor grades.
Then things start to change, notably with her male buddy Chiaki, when she discovers that she considers our actions harmful to others and that her jumps are limited.
This innovative play, however, has won numerous honors and plaudits because not everything is as it appears. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is a fantastic anime, whether you’re seeking for romance or not.
