In order to get out of the country, David is given a compass by a soldier who tells him to go southwest to Greece, then to Italy, and finally north to Denmark, a peaceful and neutral country. Also, he is warned by the guard not to place his trust in anyone.

His childhood at camp has left him feeling isolated and uncertain about the world around him, so he has a hard time dealing with emotions and trusting anyone. While he is abused by some people, he is treated nicely by others.

In time, he begins to trust some people and open up and express his feelings to the extent that he can. Thanks to the generosity of strangers, David is finally reunited with his mother in Denmark.
