15 Best Mermaid Movies That You Should Watching Update 03/2024

Best Mermaid Movies

We thought it would be fun to compile a list of the best mermaid movies. You’ll be surprised by some of the names on this list!

One of the most intriguing fantasy creatures is the mermaid. In many ways, they’ve attracted admirers for a long time, from their glittering tails to their lives beneath the waves. Others enjoy reading about them in books and watching them in movies and television shows; others believe they have actually spotted these beautiful creatures.

Nonetheless, we’ve compiled a list of the best mermaid-themed films. There are well-known works, like Disney’s Ariel’s story, as well as lesser-known ones, which may end up on some readers’ must-see lists.

Amanda Bruce has added new content. In June 2020: There will always be mermaids in movies because consumers find them fascinating. It’s possible that the mermaids in question be both charming and savage at the same time, or even both. Regardless of the sort of mermaid, there’s always one that moviegoers will fall in love with in all of the movies added since this list was first published.

 1. Miranda

Miranda

Originally released in 1948, this film may have been responsible for igniting the fascination in mermaids on the big screen. Mermaids had been featured in short films prior to this, but this was the first major production.

The movie, which is based on a stage play, depicts a fisherman who rescues a mermaid he’s accidently caught. While everyone’s relationships in a small village revolve around her, she gets into all kinds of trouble. It was so successful that it sparked a second film.

2. Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Even though this latest Pirates of the Caribbean film isn’t actually about mermaids, it does contain a novel take on the aquatic creatures. They’re a type of siren, and Captain Blackbeard needs a tear from one in a convoluted plan.

While the story’s depiction of mermaids is a unique new perspective on the mythical creature, it’s also an exciting addition to The Pirates of the Caribbean cinematic universe.

3.  Peter Pan (2003)

Peter Pan (2003)

Despite the fact that the 2003 version of Peter Pan isn’t the first version of the film, it is the most authentic representation of the original plot. Aside from the story’s focus on Wendy’s maturation, the mermaids represent some of Wendy’s first contacts with Neverland.

The mermaids aren’t really nice, and this is the first Peter Pan retelling to make them genuinely dangerous rather than just resentful of Wendy’s presence as they attempt to drown her.

4. The Little Mermaid

The live-action version of this story, starring Poppy Drayton as the titular character, is not to be mistaken with the Disney animated version.

During a visit to a traveling circus, the reporter is perplexed as to whether or not the woman he sees is a real mermaid. It’s his niece’s condition that prompts him to create a story about a “mermaid healing water” that the man hosting the show is selling, but instead he finds himself in the heart of a struggle for the woman’s freedom. It’s a love story and an adventure, like most mermaid tales.

5. The Mermaid

The Mermaid

The Mermaid premiered in Chinese film in 2016. It was a huge success at the box office, outperforming all of its rivals.

Shan is the mermaid in the film. Her mermaid family lives in a shipwrecked ship off the coast of China, and she sails to China to help them out. Assaulting the man whose corporation is in charge of polluting their section of the water is part of the plot. Shan, on the other hand, falls in love with him after he lets go of his guard, and the movie shifts from a romantic comedy to an action adventure. In addition to mermaids, the film also featured an uncle with octopus limbs.

6. The Little Mermaid

Disney’s 1989 release The Little Mermaid is the first film on the list. Ariel, a mermaid who wishes to live among humans, falls in love with a human prince named Eric in this Hans Christian Andersen-inspired fairy tale.

The leading females of each Disney princess film are revered because they are always so gorgeous and courageous. It’s also worth noting that happy endings and witty tunes, as well as wacky characters like sidekicks and villains, always enhance the whole plot.

7.  Splash

Splash, a 1984 rom-com film, was released. Ron Howard’s film stars Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah, as well as John Candy and Eugene Levy as supporting cast members. When Touchstone Pictures, a subsidiary of Walt Disney Studios, was founded in the late 1970s, this was the company’s first release.

Is it possible to fall in love with a mermaid? That’s what this film’s plot revolves around? Add this to the to-do list if someone hasn’t seen it yet.

8. Harry Potter & The Goblet Of Fire

Harry Potter & The Goblet Of Fire

Many fascinating animals can be found in Harry Potter’s magical realm, including the merpeople. In 2005, they appeared in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the fourth film.

It was during the Triwizard Tournament that people were put to sleep by these submerged creatures. Although they appear just briefly in the film, the Black Lake at Hogwarts serves as a reminder that mermaids are an important part of the story.

9. Mermaids

This discussion would not be complete without including Mermaids. It was released in 1990 and starred Cher, Winona Ryder, and Christina Ricci, all of whom were well-known at the time. First time out for Ricci and Ryder both won and nominated for their roles in this picture.

These three actresses did not portray mermaids, but there are references to swimming, and Cher wore a fantastic costume for Halloween. Watching it for the first time or rewatching it are strong enough reasons to do so.

10. The Thirteenth Year

The Thirteenth Year, a Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM) that premiered in 1999, follows on this list. The story revolved around a teenage kid who discovered that his mother is a mermaid, just like any other DCOM. How did he find out about this? When he was 13, of course, he began to grow some scales and fins!

The Thirteenth Year, despite its lack of critical praise, is a fun and family-friendly film to watch.

11. Aquamarine

Aquamarine

Aquamarine, on the other hand, was released in 2006. It is based in part on a 2001 young adult book. Emma Roberts, Joanna “JoJo” Levesque, and Sara Paxton star in this film about two girls who discover a mermaid in a swimming pool.

Yes, this is a great book for everyone who appreciates a nice aquatic fantasy novel. Look at those adorable little ones!

12. Peter Pan

Peter Pan is another Disney film that features these mythical creatures. In 1953, this animated film was launched, and it depicted the story of a group of children fleeing the realities of the world and escaping to Neverland.

Wendy, John, and Michael Darling first encountered mermaids when they arrived in this land with Peter. Their tails were glistening. Starfish were utilized as hair ornaments by these women. They also tried to drown Wendy! However, despite their lack of sweetness, these supporting characters deserve more attention because they are well-known and beloved characters from a well-known company.

13.  Lady In The Water

Lady In The Water

Lady in the Water, which has been around since 2006, is a thriller that falls within this category. In addition to Paul Giamatti and Bryce Dallas Howard in the cast, it was written, produced, and directed by M. Night Shyamalan (renowned for his twists) (who is pictured here).

This film’s story revolves around a woman who is found in a pool… a water nymph. Water nymph stories aren’t common, therefore this one deserves a mention for being an undervalued gem.

14. Sabrina Down Under

On Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Melissa Joan Hart portrayed Sabrina Spellman from 1996 through 2003. This adolescent witch and her talking cat, Salem, traveled to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia in 1999 to preserve mermaids from ocean pollution in the TV movie Sabrina Down Under. If you’re looking for something to keep you awake at night, go no further than this. What’s not to like?

15.  Beach Blanket Bingo

Beach Blanket Bingo

This mermaid list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Beach Blanket Bingo. Beach Party 5 was released in 1965, making it the fifth and most popular film in the beach party series.

It also managed to cram a lot into this little novella. Sugar Kane is a singer whose agency is abusing her. Skydiving is an option. An attempt to make a guy jealous is underway.
