For decades, Bollywood has been synonymous with love stories. Every film we see teaches us a new concept of love, like ‘Pyaar dosti hai’ from Kuch Kuch Hota hai and ‘Ek tarfa pyaar ki taakat’ from Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. There is a huge disparity between how filmmakers define love and how the audience actually connects with the characters in the movies. So, in an effort to make you a little love sick, we’ve compiled a list of Bollywood romance films that you must see.
1. Bollywood Romantic Movie – Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013)
Ek Tha Tiger, Aapke Hain Deewani, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Kalki Koechlin, Aditya Roy Kapur and Deepika Padukone was directed by Ayan Mukherji and released in 2012. The script, songs, and performances, as well as the on-screen chemistry between Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, all contributed to the film’s success. Bunny (Ranbir Kapoor) and Naina (Deepika Padukone) are the central characters of the story, who meet and fall in love at two distinct but equally significant points in their lives. In this film, love and friendship are celebrated in a beautiful way. Ayan Mukherji performed an excellent job with the film’s director and production.
2. Bollywood Romantic Movie – Ram Leela (2013)
Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone star in Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directed Ram Leela, their debut film together. The story of Ram (Ranveer Singh) and Leela (Deepika Padukone), two people from opposing families who fall in love and must make a sacrifice for their relationship, is adapted from Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet.’ The film stars both Singh and Padukone. Audiences were treated to a visual feast in this picture, which also pushed storytelling boundaries in the Indian cinema industry.
3. Bollywood Romantic Movie – Manmarziyaan (2018)
New-age love story starring Vicky Kaushal, Abhishek Bachchan, and Taapsee Pannu directed by Anurag Kashyap. When it comes to love and relationships, Manmarziyan’s perspective is refreshing. Anurag Kashyap’s latest film explores the turmoil and emotions that a person goes through. When it comes to marriage, Vicky (played by Vikcy Kaushal) has cold feet and avoids the topic with Rumi (played by Taapsee Pannu). Rejected by Vicky, Rumi agrees to marry Robbie, who falls in love with her even after learning of Vicky’s existence. The plot then shifts to how the three characters handle love.
4. Bollywood Romantic Movie – Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016)
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, directed by Karan Johar and starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Fawad Khan, is a film about unconditional love, heartbreak, and growth. The story of one-sided love and how we’ve all experienced it made the audience feel connected to the film. What happens when Alizeh (Anushka Sharma) becomes a friend to both Ayan (Ranbir Kapoor) and Alizeh (Anushka Sharma)? How does Ayan deal with his one-sided relationship? We laughed, wept, and fell in love with the characters in this film. Songs from the film, as well as the tale, were well-received.
5. Bollywood Romantic Movie – Aashiqui 2 (2013)
Aashiqui 2 stars Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur in a Mohit Suri-directed film, but it’s nothing like Aashiqui. Love in this film is depicted as pure, intense, selfless and full of emotions in a classic romance. A whirlwind of emotions awaits you in this flick. There is a terrific chemistry between the two actors. In the plot, a struggling singer named Rahul Jaykar (Aditya Roy Kapur) falls in love with a bar singer named Aarohi (Shraddha Kapoor). Her success as a singer is helped along by his alcoholism, which threatens the couple’s relationship. So, if you enjoy heart-pounding love stories, this is a definite must-see.
6. Bollywood Romantic Movie – Rockstar (2011)
When it comes to romantic films, you can rely on Imiaz Ali.
He provides a worthwhile experience for the audience’s time and money. In case you haven’t already seen it, Rockstar, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Nargis Fakhri, is an absolute masterpiece. JJ (Ranbir Kapoor) is an aspiring musician who dreams of making it big in the music industry. Following the advice of his college canteen manager, he follows through on his promise to ‘get you heartbroken and you can become a superstar’ After that, JJ meets Heer (Nargis Fakhri), the cutest girl on campus, and their complicated love affair begins. Add this to your list of things to watch if you enjoy good movies. We can’t help but love the soundtrack as well as the tale, and we haven’t heard anything better than Rockstar’s album to date.
7. Bollywood Romantic Movie – Khoobsurat (2014)
Khoobsurat, directed by Shashanka Ghosh, shows us all what it’s like to fantasize of marrying our prince charming.
This film, starring Sonam Kapoor and Fawad Khan, is one of our all-time favorites.
Dr. Mili (Sonam Kapoor) is a physiotherapist recruited by Rajasthani prince Shekhar Singh Rathore to help him recover from an injury (Aamir Raza). She subsequently meets his son Vikram (Fawad Khan), who is a very different character. When it comes to Mili and Vikram, they are two completely different people. However, the story proceeds to show how the two fall in love. We were blown away by the performance of both actors and the film’s Disney-esque feel.
8. Bollywood Romantic Movie – Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015)
In Bhumi Pednekar and Ayushmann Khurrana’s debut film, Dum Laga Ke Haisha, Bhumi received a lot of accolades for her transition into Sandhya. Compared to other romantic comedies, this one featured a novel approach. Sandhya (Bhumi Pednekar) is a well-educated but overweight girl with whom Prem (Ayushmann Khurrana) marries after he drops out of school. Prem is ashamed of his wife and makes disparaging remarks about her, but the two decide to participate in a couples race and get closer as a result. The film’s director, Sharat Kataria, has done an outstanding job with this straightforward but profound tale. Both Bhumi and Ayushmann have a long way to go in terms of their acting careers!
9. Bollywood Romantic Movie – Barfi (2012)
Barfi, directed by Anurag Basu, is a heartwarming tale that never fails to bring tears to our eyes. A love story between Priyanka Chopra, Ranbir Kapoor, and Ileana D’Cruz is told in this film. An autistic man named Barfi (Ranbir Kapoor) falls in love with a deaf woman named Shruti (Ileana D’Cruz), but she marries another man because of social pressure. Barfi’s affection for Jilmil (Priyanka Chopra), an autistic kid, causes her to reassess her marriage years later. This picture had an outstanding cast of characters. Not only was the performance superb, but the film’s directing, script, and score were all heartwarming.
