Some critics found the show to be disappointing, while others found it to be entertaining. After the first season, however, the network decided to cancel the show due to the low viewership ratings.

It’s Ben Kingsley who plays the pastor in this neo-noir series set in a small US town. Pastor Byron Brown and his wife are adored by the locals, who address them as Pa and Ma, respectively. Tom Tykwer stated that he compares the time period of the story to the present day because democracy is under attack in both periods. Hitler rose to power not long after the Weimer Republic ended. The series has received high praise from critics for its excellent production design, plot, and screenplay.
