This Is Something That Everyone Should See
In the same genre, there are a slew of other excellent films. You need to see these ten films like The Edge of Seventeen.
The Edge Of Seventeen, starring Hailee Steinfeld, was released in 2016 and tells the story of Nadine, a troubled adolescent who is dealing with the death of her father. Even worse, Nadine’s best friend, Krista (Haley Lu Richardson), has developed feelings for her brother.
Popular because it offers a new perspective on the classic tale of adolescent misery and shows that growing up is difficult for everyone. Numerous other well-made films of the same genre exist. You need to see these ten films like The Edge of Seventeen.
1. Love, Simon (2018)
The film adaptation of Becky Albertalli’s young adult novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda stars Nick Robinson as Simon, a teenager trying to keep his sexual orientation a secret from his family and friends.
When he’s writing to “Blue,” his pen pal, he feels free to be himself and say what he wants to say. As with Simon in The Edge Of Seventeen, both Simon and Nadine are misunderstood characters in this film. They also seem like they’d make great companions due to their complementary personalities of cynicism and sophistication.
2. Paper Towns (2015)
The movie Paper Towns is based on a young adult novel, as is The Fault in Our Stars. The main characters are Margo Roth Spiegelman and Quentin Jacobson, aka Q, who are neighbors in Jake Schreier’s film adaptation of John Green’s 2008 novel of the same name.
Cara Delevingne’s Margo vanishes, and Q, played by Nat Wolff, is left to try to solve the mystery and pick up the pieces as Margo’s disappearance. Q, like Nadine, isn’t your typical adolescent. When it comes to Nadine, she realizes she has been a jerk and should be more supportive of Krista and her brother’s relationship, just as Q must grow up and move on from Margo to become a mature person.
3. The First Time (2012)
For fans of The Edge Of Seventeen, there’s also 2012’s The First Time. It’s great that the characters speak and act like real teenagers throughout the story, which adds realism and authenticity to the experience.
During a party, Dylan O’Brien’s Dave Hodgman and Britt Robertson’s Aubrey Miller begin chatting, and the movie follows their interactions over the next few days. In terms of tone, it’s like The Edge Of Seventeen.
4. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)
To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before is another excellent teen film. Netflix’s adaptation of Jenny Han’s novel was a hit, and rightfully so: it’s charming and endearing.
This film, like The Edge of Seventeen, depicts how difficult high school can be for almost every student, and how embarrassing it can be in a variety of ways. When Lara Jean Covey (Lana Condor) receives Nadine’s letters to her crushes, she feels humiliated. Nadine says awkward things, whether she admits who she has a crush on or acts immaturely.
5. Everything, Everything (2017)
Everything, Everything, a film adaptation of Nicola Yoon’s young adult novel about Maddy, was released in 2017. (Amandla Stenberg). Because of an autoimmune disease known as SCID, she is unable to leave the house. She develops feelings for Olly (Love, Simon’s Nick Robinson), the boy who lives down the street from her.
Despite the fact that Nadine is healthy and can go outside without a problem, she feels somewhat isolated and is unwilling to broaden her horizons by meeting new people or taking advantage of new opportunities.
6. The Art Of Getting By (2011)
The Art of Getting By, a quiet, contemplative film from 2011, is reminiscent of The Edge of Seventeen in tone.
A real bond forms between Sally Howe and George Zinavoy, two teenagers played by Emma Roberts and Freddie Highmore. George despises going to school and is struggling mightily to learn anything. It appears as though both Nadine and Sally have lost their self-esteem and are struggling to be content. Before, this book was titled The Art of Making It Through Without Failing.
7. Some Kind Of Wonderful (1987)
The John Hughes film Some Kind Of Wonderful, from 1987, isn’t as well-known as The Breakfast Club or Pretty in Pink, but it’s just as good.
An ensuing love triangle develops between Mary Stuart Masterson’s character Watts, her best friend Keith Nelson (Eric Stoltz), and wealthy socialite Amanda Jones (Lea Thompson). Watts adores Keith, so the fact that he adores Amanda is heartbreaking. There’s a love triangle between Nadine, Krista, and Nadine’s brother in The Edge Of Seventeen, so the two movies have a similar vibe.
8. Lady Bird (2017)
Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) resembles Nadine’s tough older sister in terms of cynicism. Fans of The Edge of Seventeen will enjoy the 2017 film Lady Bird because it features two actors from the show who are likely to appear in the same movie together.
As for Lady Bird and Nadine, they’ve both given up on the idea that they’ll be understood by their classmates or family members while still in high school. These are two films that manage to be both intelligent and hilarious at the same time.
9. Someone Great (2019)
Rather than the protagonist needing to find love, the 2019 Netflix film Someone Great focuses on friendship. Jenny Young, played by Gina Rodriguez, is about to move to San Francisco to work for Rolling Stone and finds herself single. As a music songwriter, this means a lot to her.
The realization that friends have your back and are an important part of your identity is shared by both The Edge of Seventeen and Someone Great. But Jenny has already realized how special Krista is, whereas Nadine only realizes it at the end of the movie.
10. Clueless (1995)
In many ways, Clueless is regarded as a modern classic because it served as a model for so many other movies about adolescence. People who liked The Edge of Seventeen will like this movie.
Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverstone) needs to get over her ego in order to be happy, just as Nadine did because she had preconceived notions about how she should think and act. The two stories do have a lot in common, of course. While she does wear a lot of beautiful clothes in the meantime, Nadine appears to be wearing the same blue jacket over and over again.
