Critics are calling Crazy Rich Asians “the first Hollywood movie with an all-Asian cast in the last quarter-century,” but “envy-inducing” wealth is nothing new. Since there is much to admire about what we see on television, we should not be surprised. Rather than sitting there going, “WTF!?” Is that something I can get my hands on?” to “How do I get my hands on that?” The fun of watching what you could do if money were no object, so we’ve compiled a list of the best movies about living the high life.
1. Clueless (1995)
Directed by: Amy Heckerling
Cher (Alicia Silverstone), the only daughter of a successful lawyer, has it all. You can see what you’re going to wear before you put it on by looking at her closet, which has a preview of what you’re going to wear before you put it on (and was really way ahead of its time). If you’re looking for someone who’s just as upbeat as she is, look no further than this girl.
2. Legally Blonde (2001)
Directed by: Robert Luketic
With a convertible car, a pool in her backyard, and an adorable dog that fits in her hand, Elle Woods has it all. Everything she can afford comes complete with her all-pink wardrobe, of course. Furthermore, her upbringing as a spoiled child works in her favor, as she uses it to her advantage in court.
3. Princess Diaries (2001)
Directed by: Garry Marshall
None of the high school students wanted to be anything other than Genovian Princess Amelia “Mia” Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi (Anne Hathaway). In her role as heir to the throne, she gets access to a huge castle, a beautiful room, and a remote-controlled closet (including a very loyal and lovable staff). Everyone watched the movie and then went online to discover if they, too, were descended from royalty.
4. Marie Antoinette (2006)
Directed by: Sofia Coppola
For Marie Antoinette, nothing is ever too much (Kirsten Dunst). She’s a queen who understands how to have a good time at parties in the Palace of Versailles, how to dress provocatively, and how to enjoy the finer things in life. She won’t stop until the French people come to her door with pitchforks, since she knows no one can tell her no.
5. Arthur (2011)
Directed by: Peter Baynham
As long as Bitterman, Lillian, and Lillian’s nanny Lillian (Helen Mirren) have been there, Arthur has done nothing but sit around and be served by them (Luis Guzman). As the sole heir to his family’s billion-dollar firm, he knows how to spend his money on Batman and Robin costume sets, horse-riding photos, and a light-up solar system as night lighting for his room.
6. The Great Gatsby (2012)
Directed by: Baz Luhrmann
Throwing extravagant parties to see whether the girl you want would attend is a certain way to show off your wealth. Just as Leonardo diCaprio’s Jay Gatsby does. While Daisy (Carey Mulligan) lives in a house across the street, he even constructs an enormous palace to host the festivities. The sumptuous parties are attended by the wealthiest of the wealthy, and Gatsby doesn’t hold back when it comes to the wine, the décor, and the grandeur of it all.
7. Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
Directed by: Martin Scorsese
Jordan Belford (Leonardo DiCaprio) undoubtedly has three of everything: homes, helicopters, and yachts. As a stock broker who is simply interested in making money for himself, you get this. When he’s not working, Belford wires his millions of dollars to a Swiss bank account in the off-hours. While he revels in all that money can buy, including wild parties, fast vehicles and money-hungry buddies in the night, at the same time,
8. The Bling Ring (2013)
Directed by: Sofia Coppola
The lives of the wealthy and famous are frequently portrayed as idyllic. That’s what the notorious Bling Ring members believe, too. Paris Hilton, Rachel Bilson, Orlando Bloom, Megan Fox, and Lindsay Lohan were among the celebrities targeted by the gang. Real-life events are depicted in this film, which depicts a group of young people stealing from their famous idols and displaying their stolen possessions as if they were their own.
9. Fifty Shades of Grey (2015)
Directed by: Sam Taylor-Johnson
Readers and moviegoers alike fell in love with Jamie Dornan’s portrayal of Christian Grey. After all, he’s tall, dark, and handsome—not to mention obscenely wealthy. When he acquires the company that Anna (Dakota Johnson) works for, Grey Enterprise Holdings Inc., he tries his hand at numerous fields, including technology, farming, and publishing. He takes Anna on dates with helicopters, private jets, yachts, and needlessly fast sports cars since he is extremely wealthy. Not to mention the fact that he lavishes her with presents like a new phone, laptop, and her own sports car, all on the cheap.
10. Ocean’s Eight (2018)
Directed by: Gary Ross
A-listers and those who are lucky enough to be in their midst attend the Met Gala, which is the most opulent gala of the year.
To view the exquisite intricacies of their couture outfits and their multi-million dollar heaps of jewelry, which require insurance only for one night out of their safe, Ocean’s Eight lets you in on all the action.
