6 Best Shows Like The Get Down That You Should Watching Update 04/2024

Shows Like The Get Down

If you’ve already seen all six episodes of Netflix’s The Get Down, then you’ve already seen Netflix’s The Get Down. What do you watch now that you’ve finished Baz Luhrmann’s kinetic musical spectacle about the beginnings of hip-hop in the South Bronx in 1977? Some of the best movies to follow up on the show’s themes of disco, early hip-hop, and New York City may be found in this list of recommendations.

1. Wild Style / Beat Street / Krush Groove

Beat Street

The Get Down is a reenactment of hip-early hop’s days. Perhaps it would be better if we followed up with films from the period. Wild Style, Beat Street, and Krush Groove are considered to be the best hip-hop movies ever made. At this point in time, a few years after The Get Down premiered, these films were filmed and feature Grandmaster Flash, DJ Kool Herc and Run-DMC at the height of their powers. As such, don’t hold your breath for any outstanding performances or meaningful dialogue.

2. Romeo + Juliet

Romeo Juliet

The Get Down is unquestionably the creation of Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, despite the fact that television is typically referred to as a writer’s medium. In every frame of the show, his hyper-kinetic, ultra-loud music-heavy approach can be found. However, when it works, Luhrmann’s overblown works can be rather enjoyable (we’re not sure anyone has really watched the entire Australia). As for Romeo and Juliet, it’s never worked better than the famous 1990s version that made Leonardo DiCaprio a star and brought Shakespeare’s everlasting love story to contemporary day California.

3. The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby

Another Baz Luhrmann picture that resembles The Get Down the most is his adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald’s renowned novel The Great Gatsby, which he reunited with Leo over 20 years after Romeo + Juliet. Even though this isn’t a musical, the soundtrack is produced by Jay Z, who has a prominent role in putting hip-hop at the forefront of the film. At the close of the Roaring Twenties, New York is once again at the center of a pivotal chapter in its history.

4. Saturday Night Fever

Saturday Night Fever

The Get Down has received a lot of attention for its hip-hop, but the old-school disco is just as good. And if you still want more disco, watch Saturday Night Fever, the ultimate disco film. If you’ve never seen it, don’t worry: It’s a more serious film than you might imagine, given its often ridiculed clothes, soundtrack and even John Travolta.

5. Boogie Nights

Boogie Nights

The Get Down and Boogie Nights are two completely distinct films (the porn industry). In contrast, Paul Thomas Anderson’s humorous, sweeping porno drama is what you need if you’re a fan of the late 1970s’ attitudes, styles, and sounds. Dirk Diggler, starring Mark Wahlberg, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Don Cheadle, and John C Reilly, is one of Wahlberg’s best performances ever.

6. Do The Right Thing

Do The Right Thing

Is New York still the same city it was before The Get Down? The city of New York’s finest cinematic historian is none other than Spike Lee, and Do The Right Thing remains his crowning achievement. I think it perfectly captures the growth of New York City after The Get Down and moving to Brooklyn.
