Merlin is a 1998 television miniseries that tells the King Arthur legend from the point of view of the wizard Merlin, who appears in it. As the title suggests, Sam Neill plays the title role in a film that chronicles not only the rise and fall of Camelot, but also a period in British legend preceding that time period. With new characters such as Queen Mab and Merlin remaining throughout King Arthur’s British reign, the film departs from more traditional versions of the legend. A looser adaptation of the Arthurian legend, Merlin’s Apprentice, was released in 2006 as a sequel to the first film.
