After nearly four years enchanting adults and children alike in London’s West End, one year on Broadway and a record-breaking UK tour, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang has started its engine for the flight to Singapore.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang will be staged at the Esplanade Theatre from 2 November for a limited season. Tickets are available through all SISTIC channels, with prices ranging from S$40 to S$170.
“Breathtaking! It’s a big, joyful, enchanting show.
It should run and run.”
John Peter, The Sunday Times
The multi-award-winning production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang boasts sensational sets rivaling The Phantom of the Opera, stunning special effects and a cast of over 70, including 8 dogs. This classic musical tells the story of a magical flying car, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, built by eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts. Together with his two children Jemima and Jeremy, Truly Scrumptious and Grandpa Potts, they try to outwit the dastardly Baron and the evil Child Catcher.
Legendary West End actor Richard O’Brien reprises his original London Palladium role of the Child Catcher, which received great critical and audience acclaim. The UK’s Daily Telegraph said “Richard O’Brien is a wonderfully sinister and charismatic Child Catcher,” while The Times said “when Richard O’Brien’s pointy-eared, pointy-nosed, gloriously sinister Child Catcher … ends up disappearing through the ceiling - well even I couldn’t help joining in the oohs and ahhs.”
But the real star of the show is Chitty Chitty Bang Bang itself - a 1.5 tonne car that really flies, using state-of-the-art automation technology not seen on the theatre stage before. The car is the original from the London production, and holds the Guinness World Record for the most expensive prop in the history of British Theatre.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang features numerous favourite songs such as Truly Scrumptious, Toot Sweets, Hushabye`Mountain and the Oscar-nominated title song composed by The Sherman Brothers.
“Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is an amazing spectacle, with sets to take the breath away and high-tech wizardry that makes Harry Potter look pedestrian.”

The iconic film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was written by Ian Fleming, the author of the James Bond books, for his son Caspar and was his only children’s book. The maker of the James Bond movies, Albert R (Cubby) Broccoli, produced the film. He always hoped to create a stage version of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang but it only became a reality 34 years later, when producers were confident that the technology existed to fly a 1.5 tonne car with actors inside.
The stage show is adapted from the original film by Jeremy Sams, and directed by Adrian Noble, artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, with design by Anthony Ward, choreography by Gillian Lynne and lighting by Mark Henderson.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is produced in Singapore by Lunchbox Theatrical Productions and David Atkins Enterprises, who recently produced the box-office phenomenon The Phantom of the Opera, in association with Barbara Broccoli, Michael G Wilson, Dana Broccoli, Frederick Zollo, Nicholas Paleologos, Jeffrey Sine and Michael Rose Ltd.
Not to be missed, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is an action-packed adventure that will appeal to adults and children alike.
